Getting started

This breakfast has the same recipe as every year: learn by doing yourself. Its a ‘work’-shop in the classical way. If you plan to see presentations today you are at the wrong place.

First things first

Breakfast is available until 10 AM. Feel free to help yourself. Coffee, tea and other drinks will be available all morning. We are here today to help you with BIMserver questions, so food and drinks are selfservice.

Introduction

Today will be a very informal event. This is a workshop in the classical way, which means you have to work. Today you have a golden chance to get to know everything you ever wanted to know about the open source BIMserver software.
There are a few ways to get information today:

  1. Movies and screencasts (movies of what you should see on your screen with explanation by voice)
  2. Ask the guy next to you (this is the 4th breakfast and our slogan always is ‘working with a BIMserver means working together!’)
  3. Ask an expert / advanced user. They walk around in BIMserver shirts. You can ask everything you want. If they are talking to somebody else, try to bring them over with coffee (black).
  4. After today you can always find your answers on http://support.bimserver.org It’s our new site for fast and reliable community support.

This website is completely dedicated to option number 1: the movies and screencasts. In the menu above you can choose categories for the movies you want to see. The big idea is that you try to use the software by yourself on you own laptop. The movies will help you step by step along the way.

There are 3 option for trying the software:

  • A: Try a demoserver.
We installed a special demoserver for this event. It is a cloudserver that is very fast and stable. You can experience all features of the software. We’ve already created an account for you. Your e-mail is your login name. You are a ‘normal’ user on this server, which means you cannot try the administrator features. If you want to try the administration settings, choose option B.
  • B: Install the 1.0 final version on your own laptop.
Instead of using a demoserver, you can transform your laptop into a demoserver in a few minutes. Download and install the software and your laptop will be your own private BIMserver. You don’t have to share bandwidth and can use all the administrator features and settings.
  • C: Install the 1.1 beta version on your own laptop.
When you are an experienced user, and are here today to see what new features will be in 1.1, we don’t have to explain a lot. Download the 1.1 beta and choose the 1.1 category in the movies section. And of course: have fun!
When you are new, start with A and work your way up. When you are experienced, your probably think we waisted your time with this introduction. Sorry about that.

Twitter

Our twitter account is @bimserver. We use #BIMserver most of the time and probably also today. Hope you do too!

Bug, feature, give praise?

Go to http://support.bimserver.org Don’t hesitate to send us ideas and bugs. Your feedback is very important to us (that is why we organise this event!).

Program/Agenda side events.

There will be some side-events as well today. We have two ‘breakout’-rooms with several (mostly short) presentations. There will be an IFC introduction by Peter Bonsma, short (10 minutes) presentations by advanced users of BIMserver.org (some commercial, some not), a (Dtuch) announcement of a Dutch collaborative initiative between NLingenieurs, BNA, Bouwend Nederland and TNO. Find your way in the agenda.

Still not enough?

Join us at the SCIA presentation at 12.30 (location Syntens). They will serve lunch!
